The Redondo Beach Educational Foundation
The Redondo Beach Educational Foundation, (RBEF) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Their mission is to raise money to supplement state funds for staff and instructional programs in all RBUSD schools. In 1991, a group of concerned parents and community leaders established RBEF when they realized that an excellent school system could not rely on state funding alone. RBEF raises money for the local school system through its annual investor drive, business partnerships, and special events. There are various opportunities for volunteering with RBEF.

Rover Rescue
Rover Rescue is a non-profit organization based in Redondo Beach, California. It was founded in 2001 to save homeless dogs by placing them in permanent and loving homes. Today, Rover Rescue is bettering the lives of local homeless dogs in many ways.
- Each dog is placed in a caring foster home or boarded until the right owner is found.
- During their stay with Rover Rescue, volunteers walk, socialize and give these dogs the loving care they need.
- Proper medical attention is given to injured or sick dogs.
- Dogs are vaccinated, spayed or neutered, and even given “beauty makeovers“.
- Matching fostered dogs with the right prospective owners during the adoption process.
- Educating new owners on the proper care of their new best friends.
In addition to these services to homeless dogs, Rover Rescue works hard in our community to reduce animal overpopulation and increase vital awareness about responsible pet ownership. Rover Rescue actively supports the spaying and neutering of all companion dogs and offers spay/neuter financial assistance to low-income families.

South Bay LGBTQ Center
Per its mission statement: “The Lesbian, Gay, Bi & Transgender Community Organization’s mission is to provide a focal point for the members of our community in the South Bay for education, social interaction, personal growth, and political power, and to foster public understanding of our community.”

South Bay Literacy Council
The South Bay Literacy Council is a South Bay, Los Angeles-based 501(c)3 non-profit organization focused on teaching people to speak, read, and write English effectively in order to better function in today’s complex society.
This organization is operated completely by volunteers. It serves residents in Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Torrance, and 14 other South Bay communities. There are 5 learning centers located throughout the South Bay.

Volunteer Center South Bay
The Volunteer Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization funded through program fees, grants, fundraisers and donations from local residents, and a generous community of supporters. The service area for this nonprofit consists of the South Bay, Harbor, and Long Beach areas. The Volunteer Center also serves 44 cities through our Court Referral Community Service Program, stretching north to Santa Monica and Beverly Hills and south to Long Beach and Bellflower.
This impressive community organization has been “at the heart of helping” in South Bay for over 50 years. It is responsible for creating many of its own fantastic community programs such as Operation Teddy Bear and Food For Kids. The Volunteer Center South Bay has also referred more than a million volunteers to hundreds of nonprofit agencies locally who maintain critical programs for those in need.

Make the Most out of Volunteering
Your time is very valuable to you and to others in your life. When you make the commitment to share your time volunteering, it is important that you, as well as those you are helping, are able to enjoy and benefit from the experience.
There are crucial questions to ask a volunteer coordinator when considering an opportunity. Ask questions such in regard to who you will be working with and where you will be working. Also, ask what hours and what days you will be needed. Asking these questions upfront will help you find the opportunity that is the best fit for you.
Another great tip for starting out is to start out with a smaller commitment of time so that you don’t overcommit yourself. This will allow you to be flexible to switch things up if needed.
If you find yourself in a volunteer position that isn’t the right fit after all, or if you feel uncomfortable in your role, don’t be afraid to have a conversation about it with the organization. There are usually other areas of focus or positions within that organization that could be a better fit for you. The most important thing you can do when volunteering is to have fun and enjoy yourself. When you are doing that, you and the cause are winners!
